President Pam Purvis
ECOKAPS
Last week, the meeting was presented with a proposal and a challenge.
Can we, as a club, spearhead another program, in this case, one which will help the
environment and reduce plastic waste.to make a difference?
One our members, Syd Shilling, has an interest in a company, ECOKAPS, which has
produced a 98% (2% is scent) biodegradable cleaning product in the form of a tablet (or
powder for commercial use) which dissolves in water. Given that 80% of cleaning products
are water, the user is paying for what is essentially 'empty space'. They also supply
aluminium & glass bottles which can be used for years to avoid the need for plastic
containers. As a result, the reduced size of this biodegradable product and the recyclable
containers, impact on transport costs, atmospheric & ocean pollution as well as reducing
landfill waste.
What's our role?
Simply to use our own personal networks to refer businesses and organisations to
ECOKAPS. Once we have made the referral we step back and leave the two to deal with it.
If you have someone you can contact, we have a standard letter/email which you can adjust
to suit your needs though there are some essential elements which must be included.
What do we get in return?
Aside from making a difference and supporting one of Rotary international's Areas of Focus,
the Environment, ECOKAPS will donate up to 5% of any successful transaction to the club.
What can you do?
Think hard about your contacts and networks. Remember many businesses and organisations
are looking for ways to tick 'the caring for the environment box' and this is one such way.
Think of it as offering a way to help them and the environment, not imposing on them.
Sending an email can't do any harm and you never know, they might be pleased to have been
offered this opportunity. You will need to say upfront that the club will benefit from making
this referral by way of a donation.
In Summary
As President, I have to say that this is an exciting opportunity to help 'MAKE A
DIFFERENCE' and if we make a success of this program on the Sunshine Coast, we may be
able to share it with other clubs as we did with the LIFT the LID WALK. Congratulations to
Syd and Charles for coming up with this Rotary Network Referral Opportunity. They
have put a lot of time and energy into this proposal. Let's hope we can help to make it another
success story.
